Laboratory-scale describes drug batches made when the drug is still being tested in lab, all the way to clinical trials.

Pilot-scale describes the next level of batches which are made either for clinical trials, or for mid-later stages of clinical evaluation.

Commercial-scale, also referred to as production-scale, describes batches made when the drug is approved and released to the public. The sizes of commercial batches are dependent on the demand of the public. If demand for a drug increase, production may expand to other facilities or countries.
