To be eligible for medication subsidisation you must hold an eligible Medicare card. Medicare is the scheme that Australia uses to access healthcare. Medicare allows you to get free or subsidised medications listed on the PBS, free or subsidised treatment by most health professionals, free treatment and accommodation at pubic hospitals.

Who’s eligible for Medicare?

  • Australian Citizens
  • New Zealand Citizens
  • Australian Permanent residents
  • In the process of applying for a permanent residency
  • A temporary resident covered by a ministerial order
  • You can also receive coverage to your health care costs when you visit from a country that the Australian government has an agreement with (United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Malta, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Slovenia).
